Beneficiaries
Byrne Urban Scholars (formerly the Byrne Foundation) is a nonprofit tax-exempt organization that helps disadvantaged young people earn their high school diplomas through a combination of financial and personal support. Byrne Urban Scholars wants to make it possible for inner-city youths to compete more successfully for employment, become better qualified for further education, achieve greater personal fulfillment, and contribute more productively to society. The 107 youth served by the organization are disproportionately at risk of dropping out of high school due to complex risk factors. Many students are growing up poor in an atmosphere of crime, neglect, and chaos. To address this problem, Byrne Urban Scholars agrees to pay a portion of an at-risk student's tuition throughout four years of non-public high school education with minimum graduation rates of 90% and teams the young man or woman with a mentor. The organization provides one-on-one tutoring for students needing extra assistance during the school year as well as daily study halls, study skills training and educational workshops. The Bridge Project, a non-profit organization who helps students attend a University or trade school, has helped me through the ups and downs for the past 13 years. They provided me with a mentor, tutor, job, and most importantly assistance throughout my college years, both emotionally and financially. Bridge is my second family that is always supportive of my decisions but still able to guide me down the right path. I have faced many obstacles in life that a normal person would never have to experience, but with the support and love from the Bridge Project I was able to turn those experience into positive motivation. Bridge is a large part of my life, and I can honestly say without the kind hearted people I've met through the Bridge Project, I wouldn't be where I am today.
